Saccharine Lullaby

I awoke to the
saccharine lullaby of a
bird uncaged.
Its melody mingled with the
bittersweet cries of a
heart freshly broken.

I came downstairs to find the
window shutters dancing in a
breath of wind.
Its curtains bid adieu to the
songbird lost to my
wrought-iron heart.

—I must’ve forgotten to
shut the window last night.
