Eternity

Tell me
have you ever lain
beneath the leafy eaves
of an ancient tree?

Tell me
have you ever pressed your lips to its
spidery roots
and wondered
What have you seen?
What do you remember?

Perhaps it still remembers
the rays of sunshine on its
wizened crown
the sweet dewdrops on its
gnarled fingers.

or

Perhaps it still remembers
the girl who
swung from its
aging arms
and soared through the
pock-marked clouds.

Perhaps it still remembers
the lovers who
carved their names into its
hollow flesh
on a breathless
summer night.

Perhaps it still remembers
the woman who
watered its
twisting limbs
with crystal tears
and vowed to never return.

Perhaps it still remembers
the incessant rotation of the Earth
beneath its
knobby torso
the blustery universe hurtling past its
tired eyes.

or

Perhaps it still remembers
the graying shadow who
kissed its
wrinkled skin
hello, old friend
with her last breath.
